Five Home Maintenance Tasks You Shouldn’t Skip This Fall
For safety and peace of mind
If you own or rent a home, it’s a good idea to get in the habit of doing preventative maintenance. You want to make sure everything’s working smoothly and safely. Certain times of the year, such as the fall time change, are a great reminder to get some tasks done.
1. Wash your windows
Throughout the year, windows accumulate a lot of dirt from storms. It used to take me ages to wash my windows, and I would always be left with streaks. This year, I bought a $3 squeegee and tackled the job quickly with a sponge, bucket, and water with a drop of dish soap.
A lot of newer windows open inside to make cleaning them a lot easier and safer. Having clean windows lets more light into your home, and makes for a much neater appearance.
2. Clean out your dryer vent
Dryer lint can accumulate in its tubing, creating a fire hazard. Cleaning it out once a year is a great way to keep your home safe. Many companies sell brush kits to get the lint out of the vent. Wear gloves, too; the edges of the opened tubing can be sharp. When you’re done, make sure you tape up the vent with foil tape (not duct tape).
