Out of Cleaning and Hygiene Supplies? Try These
Reusable fixes for common necessities
With COVID-19 spreading across the globe, there has been a lot of panic. People are stocking up on supplies, and items like disinfecting wipes are in short supply.
It’s important for people to only buy what they need, and leave the rest of the supplies for those who need it. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. However, there are many easy replacements for various cleaning and/or hygiene items.
Grocery stores and pharmacies will likely replenish their stock quickly, but if you’re under quarantine or can’t find a certain item, I’ve compiled a list that may be helpful.
Disinfecting wipes
Replacement: Bleach or soap and water, wash cloths or paper towels
If you have paper towels, you can use them. Otherwise, you can use wash cloths. According to the CDC, mix 4 tsp of bleach in one quart of water for a cleaning solution, and wear gloves when you use it. (Do not mix bleach with any other soap or cleaners.)
You can also use regular soap and water to clean surfaces. Just make sure you really scrub and clean the entire area.
Tissues
Replacement: Handkerchiefs, any cloth
If you do end up sneezing and find yourself out of tissues, handkerchiefs and wash cloths can help. Just launder them after use, and you can reuse them.
Baby wipes
Replacement: Gentle cleanser and water, wash cloths
With convenient options like disposable baby wipes, we forget what our grandparents used: cloth wipes. You can use a little of your baby’s bath soap and wash cloths to clean them during diaper changes.
Collect the cloths in a bag and launder them for re-use. In my experience. Dreft detergent is great at cleaning anything kids get on their clothes, including poop, while being hypoallergenic enough for most babies.
Menstrual pads/tampons
Replacement: silicone cup or cloth pads
A menstrual cup is a great way to handle periods without having to run out for supplies. They take some getting used to, though, so reusable cloth pads may be a better option for some.
Toilet paper
Soap and water, wash cloth
It might sound a little gross, but if you’re really in a pinch, you can use a wet wash cloth to clean yourself. Toss the clothes in a plastic-lined trash bin, and then launder them.
