Where I’m at with my writing

I haven’t posted in awhile, for a variety of reasons. I’ve been getting acclimated to a new job, and Medium took away the feature of drafting a story on their mobile app. Now I really have to sit down and focus on a story, rather than chipping away at it little by little when I have the time.

I’ve also been directing more of my energy to my novels, which, for obvious reasons, take longer than articles to release. When I was younger, I could sit down and type all night and have chapters ready for beta readers in the morning. Now sometimes I fall asleep at 9 p.m. and wake up to see that all I’ve written is “main character talks to love interest??? decide on names.”

I also have different goals than when I was a younger writer. In my early 20s, I wanted to be incredibly successful. I wanted to be a bestseller and do book signings and all of that. I quickly realized that the odds of making serious money on fiction writing are slim. You might as well play the lottery.

Now I just want to write villains based on people I don’t like, and entertain the select handful of people who get my style of humor. With stakes that low, it’s easy to spend too much time arranging playlists and Pinterest mood boards, and not enough time writing.

There was also some sort of global change in the past 2+ years that affected how we all work, eat, and spend our spare time. You might know what I’m talking about. I have given myself permission to, for the first time in a long time, relax and just do what I want. Life really is precious, and we can’t spend it too concerned about the future, because we don’t know what the future will bring.

Much love,

Ellie
